Our Insurance and Tort Liability Group

Our national Insurance and Tort Liability Group is unique in its size and specialization.  It is believed to be the largest such group in Canada, comprised of 70 professionals, including 20 bilingual members in Montreal.

Our clients include many of the largest national and global insurers, reinsurers and reciprocals in Canada.  In addition, we provide legal services to major brokerage firms, large companies carrying substantial self-insured retentions, adjusting firms and regulatory bodies involved in the insurance industry.  We are involved as counsel and as litigators, in all areas of insurance law.

The scope of our work for these clients involves the drafting of policy wordings, the interpretation of policies of insurance, coverage opinions, the defence of actions brought against insurers, the defence of actions brought against their insureds, prosecution of subrogated actions and significant participation in negotiation, mediation and arbitration procedures.

Our firm's professional librarians provide outstanding research and information retrieval services.  We maintain precedent and opinion databases allowing efficient and immediate research when required.  The latest technology is employed to further assist with research and gathering of information on issues of interest to our clients, including monitoring of media sources, circulation of case law and industry reports, online databases from numerous Common Law jurisdictions, the Internet, CD-ROMS as well as the firm's collection of over 20,000 volumes.  Much of the information and databases maintained in the library is specifically directed to the insurance industry.

Client information is an integral part of our service to our Insurance Group clients.  This includes regular distribution of newsletters and special bulletins as well as the co-ordination of client seminars on specialized areas of insurance law and practice of interest.
