Background

Richard Applebaum is a partner practising with the commercial real estate group in our Toronto office.  Richard received his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1968 and his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in 1971.  Richard was admitted (with honours) to the Ontario Bar in 1973.  Richard articled with the firm of Shiff, Gross in 1971-1972 and from 1973 to 1982 was an associate and then a partner with that firm.  Following the merger of Borden & Elliot and Shiff, Gross in August 1982, Richard joined the firm as a partner.

Areas of Practice

  • Richard’s practice involves a broad variety of real estate related matters with particular emphasis on real estate development, including condominium development, mixed-use developments, financings on behalf of borrowers, real estate joint ventures, subdivisions and lot sales, land acquisitions and commercial leasing.

Professional Experience

  • Condominiums - Represented one of Ontario’s leading condominium developers in all aspects of hi-rise and low-rise condominium projects throughout the greater Metropolitan Toronto area and Ottawa.  A broad range of condominium services is also provided to condominium developers of all sizes and for all types of condominium projects including loft conversions, office building conversions, new low-rise projects and new hi-rise projects.
  • Land Development - Currently represents one of Ontario’s largest private and independent land developers relating to all aspects of its land development activities, including land acquisition, assisting in municipal approvals, financing, land servicing, lot sales and commercial block sales.
  • Borrower’s Counsel - Represents borrowers of various sizes in a broad range of real estate financings including strip and enclosed shopping centres, land acquisitions, refinancings and office building projects.
  • Entrepreneurs - In addition to representing larger clients, also represents small and medium size entrepreneurial real estate developers in all aspects of their real estate activities including acquisitions, land assemblies, financings, joint ventures and sales.
  • Leasing - Represents both landlords and tenants in commercial leasing transactions, with emphasis on representation of landlords.  Leasing experience includes commercial shopping centres, industrial projects, office buildings, restaurants and food supermarkets.

  • Member of the Canadian Bar Association
  • Noted in Lexpert as being repeatedly recommended for leading practioners for property financing and development work in the category of major full service law firms.
