Background
Mr. George Anderson is Counsel to our Calgary office. Mr. Anderson was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1964 and to the Alberta Bar in 1977. He attended Father Athol Murray’s College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan (then an affiliate of the University of Ottawa) from 1954 to 1958 and graduated from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1964.
Areas of Practice
- Mr. Anderson began his career in Winnipeg as a litigator, labour and administrative lawyer in government and in private practice. Mr. Anderson now practices in the areas of commercial law, real estate, arbitration and mediation and aboriginal law and continues to practice in administrative and employment law.
Professional Experience
- Mr. Anderson’s mandates have included:
- Had acted for a number of years for three major European pension funds as their solicitor, director, officer and Asset Manager with respect to their real estate investments in the Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
- Had acted at varying times as labour counsel for corporate clients and for unions.
- Has been retained by major municipal corporations to review and comment on a variety of municipal law matters including acting as counsel to major municipal corporations in assessment, taxation and annexation matters including the attendance before the Private Bills Committee of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and the drafting of the legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
- Has prepared opinions for major municipal corporations on a variety of issues i.e. (“the AIDS problem”, “Local Improvement Tax”, “Powers of Arrest of By-Law Enforcement Officers”) and appearing as counsel for major municipal corporations in the Alberta Courts on planning matters.
- Acts for a First Nation bordering the City of Calgary with respect to major infrastructure developments.
- Acts on behalf of corporate and individual clients with respect to planning and development, assessment and municipal taxation and expropriation matters.
- Acts for owners in the negotiation and preparation of engineering, contract management, construction and supply contracts for major developments in the Province of Alberta.
- Acts as solicitor with respect to major real estate developments in Alberta.
- Acts as counsel for municipal corporations and individuals before various boards and tribunals, i.e. “the Alberta Labour Relations Board, various Municipal Development Appeal Boards in Alberta, (the Local Authorities Board, the Alberta Planning Board, the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board and their successor, the Municipal Government Board), the N.W.T. Public Utilities Board, the National Energy Board and the Alberta Land Compensation Board and in the Alberta and Federal Courts.”
- Acts as a Chairman of Boards of Arbitration or as a sole Arbitrator in numerous grievance and interest arbitrations in the public and private sector in Alberta and as an Adjudicator under the Canada Labour Code.
- Acts as counsel in commercial arbitrations and as an arbitrator in Alberta commercial arbitrations and has acted as an arbitrator in the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration.
- Acts as counsel to management with respect to the hiring and termination of employees.
Professional and Community Activities
- Active as a lecturer and has presented published papers on municipal law, expropriation, labour and employment law.
- Is a Chartered Arbitrator.
- Is a member of the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, the Canadian Foundation for Dispute Resolution and on the roster of arbitrators for Alberta Labour.
